COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology, students complete a set of compulsory modules designed to develop both advanced academic knowledge and applied professional skills. The "Advanced Research Methods and Data Analysis (BPS)" module provides in-depth training in research design, statistical techniques, and data interpretation, ensuring students can critically evaluate and conduct high-quality research in line with British Psychological Society standards. The "Group Dynamics and Leadership in Sport and Exercise" module explores the psychological processes that influence team performance, cohesion, and leadership, equipping students with strategies to improve group functioning in sport and exercise contexts. The master’s research project is delivered in two parts: "Proposal and Ethics" focuses on developing a research idea, designing the methodology, and securing ethical approval, while "Journal Article" involves conducting the research, analyzing results, and presenting findings in a publishable academic format. "Physical Activity and Mental Health" examines the psychological benefits of physical activity, the role it plays in mental health promotion, and interventions for improving wellbeing. The "Practice of Sport and Exercise Psychology" module introduces students to the professional skills, ethics, and applied techniques used by practitioners, bridging theory and real-world application. Finally, "Skilled Performance Under Pressure" investigates the psychological factors affecting performance in high-stakes situations, offering strategies to maintain focus, resilience, and optimal execution. Together, these modules integrate research expertise, theoretical understanding, and applied practice, preparing students to work effectively in sport, exercise, and performance psychology settings while meeting professional standards for further training and career progression.
