COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the MA Continental Philosophy focuses on developing a deep understanding of key philosophical themes and research skills essential to the discipline. Central to the course is the Dissertation in Continental Philosophy, which carries 40 credits and offers students the opportunity to undertake independent research on a topic of their choice, allowing for in-depth exploration and critical analysis within the continental tradition. The module on Phenomenology and Ontology, also 40 credits, engages students with fundamental questions about existence and experience, studying the nature of being and consciousness through the works of major continental thinkers. Research Skills, a 20-credit module, equips students with essential academic techniques, including methodologies for philosophical inquiry, critical reading, and effective writing, preparing them for both their dissertation and further scholarly work. Another important module is Transcendence and The Body, which examines the relationship between the human body, experience, and the idea of transcendence in continental philosophy. This includes studying how thinkers have addressed the limits of human existence and the interaction between physicality and metaphysical concepts. Together, these modules provide a comprehensive foundation in continental philosophy, combining theoretical knowledge with practical research skills. The course encourages students to critically engage with complex ideas while developing their own philosophical perspectives. It also supports a diverse range of interests within the continental tradition, from existentialism and phenomenology to ontology and the philosophy of the body.
