COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the MA Contemporary Arts Practice is designed to immerse students in the diverse landscape of contemporary art through a series of carefully structured modules. The course begins with Connected Practices, a 20-credit module that encourages students to explore interdisciplinary approaches, linking various artistic methods and ideas to develop a broad and flexible creative practice. This foundation prepares students for the extensive Contemporary Practice Final Project, worth 60 credits, which serves as the culmination of their first-year studies. This project demands deep engagement, creativity, and critical thinking as students produce a significant body of work that reflects their evolving artistic voice and conceptual understanding. Alongside this, Contexts of Contemporary Practice, a 40-credit module, invites students to situate their work within wider cultural, historical, and social frameworks. This encourages them to understand and respond to the influences and environments that shape contemporary art today. Critical Discourses and Encounters, a 20-credit module, fosters critical thinking and dialogue, challenging students to engage with theoretical perspectives and contemporary debates within the arts. Lastly, Dimensions of Contemporary Practice, a 40-credit module, broadens students’ awareness of different artistic dimensions, including the spatial, temporal, and material aspects of art-making. Together, these modules create a comprehensive and well-rounded first-year curriculum that balances practical studio work with theoretical exploration, preparing students to become thoughtful, adaptable, and engaged artists capable of navigating the complexities of the contemporary art world. This year lays a solid foundation for further specialization and professional development in subsequent years of study.
