The first year of the MA Concept Art course offers a comprehensive and structured approach to developing the essential skills and knowledge needed for a successful career in concept art and related creative fields. The curriculum begins with modules such as Abstraction and Exploration in Design, which encourages students to experiment with ideas and visual language to build a strong foundation in creative thinking and design principles. Adoption of a Set Style helps students learn how to work within specific artistic styles, a critical skill for adapting to professional studio environments. Experimental Visual Storytelling pushes students to develop narrative skills through visual means, enhancing their ability to create compelling and engaging content. The Game Master Project is a major 60-credit module that allows students to apply their learning in a practical, project-based context, simulating real-world scenarios where they will create concept art for games or other media. Pipeline and Technical Development teaches the technical aspects of production, ensuring students understand the workflows, tools, and technologies used in the industry. Professional Practice and Entrepreneurship prepares students for the business side of their careers, covering important topics such as self-promotion, client management, and freelancing. Finally, Project Management and Research Methods equips students with the organizational and research skills needed to successfully manage complex projects and undertake informed creative development. Together, these modules provide a balanced mix of creative exploration, technical training, professional development, and practical experience, setting students on a path to build a standout portfolio and develop the confidence and skills needed to thrive in competitive creative industries.
