COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the MA Animation course provides a comprehensive foundation across various aspects of animation, combining cultural understanding, design, technology, and industry knowledge. Students begin by exploring Animation Culture and Critique, which encourages critical thinking about animation’s history, cultural significance, and its evolving role in society. This module sets the stage for understanding the wider context in which animation operates. Alongside this, Animation Design and Technology introduces the practical skills needed to create animations, focusing on the technical tools and creative processes that underpin the craft. Students gain hands-on experience and build essential competencies that support their creative ambitions.Animation Industries and Ecosystems offers insight into the professional landscape of animation, covering the business, economic, and collaborative environments in which animators work. This knowledge helps students understand the opportunities and challenges within the industry, preparing them for future careers. The Animation Presentation module further develops communication skills, guiding students on how to effectively showcase their work and ideas to peers, clients, or potential employers.A significant part of the curriculum involves practical production modules. Animation Production Consolidation and Animation Production Proofs and Solutions, both worth 40 credits each, allow students to apply their skills in real-world contexts, managing projects from concept to final delivery while solving production challenges. These modules focus on teamwork, problem-solving, and meeting professional standards.Finally, Animation Story and Performance focuses on narrative and character development, teaching students how to bring stories and characters to life through movement and expression. This blend of theory, technical skills, industry understanding, and storytelling equips students with a well-rounded skill set to excel in the dynamic animation field.
