COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of this course includes four compulsory modules designed to provide a strong foundation in international law and research skills. The Dissertation module, worth 60 credits, is a major component where students undertake independent research on a topic relevant to international law, allowing them to explore in depth an area of interest and demonstrate their analytical and writing abilities. This project encourages critical thinking, original analysis, and the practical application of knowledge gained throughout the course. The Public International Law module, carrying 20 credits, introduces students to the fundamental principles, rules, and institutions that govern relations between states and other international actors. It covers key topics such as state sovereignty, the use of force, treaties, and the roles of international organizations, providing a comprehensive overview of the legal framework that underpins global interactions. The Research Methods module, also 20 credits, equips students with essential skills needed for academic research, including qualitative and quantitative methods, literature review techniques, data analysis, and academic writing. These skills are critical not only for the dissertation but also for future professional and academic work. Lastly, the United Nations Law module, worth 20 credits, focuses on the legal structure, functions, and powers of the United Nations, exploring its role in maintaining international peace and security, human rights protection, and development. This module examines the legal challenges and controversies faced by the UN in its global operations. Together, these modules combine to provide students with a well-rounded understanding of international law, prepare them for advanced research, and enable them to critically assess and contribute to contemporary international legal issues. This combination ensures graduates are well-prepared for careers in international law, diplomacy, policymaking, and related fields.
