COURSE CURRICULUM

The Operating Department Practice degree is structured over three years, combining extensive clinical practice, theoretical knowledge, and simulation to prepare students for a professional role as operating department practitioners (ODPs). In the first year, students focus on fundamental skills essential for the role, including clinical practice and wellbeing, core clinical skills, and understanding the professional context of operating department practice. They also study the basics of bioscience, pharmacology, and the specific duties and responsibilities of an ODP. This foundation year balances hands-on learning with theory to ensure students gain a comprehensive introduction to the field.The second year builds on this foundation with further clinical practice and simulation, alongside modules that deepen understanding of the ODP role. Students study holistic care across the lifespan, post-anesthetic care, and advanced pharmacology, which are crucial for managing patients before, during, and after surgery. Research methods are introduced to develop students’ abilities in evidence-based practice, ensuring that they can critically evaluate and apply scientific knowledge in their work.In the final year, students engage in advanced clinical practice, focusing on emergency care and enhanced operating department skills. Leadership and service development modules prepare students to take on greater responsibility within healthcare teams and contribute to service improvements. A research in practice module enables students to apply research skills to real-world clinical questions. The course concludes with preparation for professional transition, equipping students to become autonomous practitioners capable of delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care. The program’s comprehensive approach ensures graduates are confident, skilled, and ready to enter the workforce as registered operating department practitioners.
