COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Nursing Practice (Mental Health) degree offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for professional roles in mental health nursing. In the first year, students study foundational topics such as mental and physical health across the lifespan, alongside core modules focused on mental health nursing care and extensive practical experience through three practice modules. The program also covers professional, legal, and ethical considerations essential to nursing practice. In the second year, the curriculum builds on this foundation with advanced topics like altered mental and physical health, human factors in risk and decision-making, and further clinical practice placements to deepen practical skills. Students also learn physical assessment and prepare for prescribing, reflecting the expanding role of nurses in healthcare delivery. The third year continues intensive practice placements to consolidate clinical expertise and confidence in mental health nursing. Alongside practical modules, students engage in peer learning and teaching to develop collaborative skills and contribute to professional development. A significant focus is placed on evidence-based practice, with a dedicated module enabling students to critically evaluate research and apply it to clinical decision-making. This integrated approach ensures graduates are well-equipped with both the theoretical knowledge and practical experience required for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as mental health nurses.
