COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Nursing Practice (Child) degree provides a thorough education combining academic study with extensive practical placements to prepare students for a career in children’s nursing. In the first year, students study core topics such as children and young people’s nursing care, professional, legal and ethical considerations, and mental and physical health across the lifespan. Alongside this, they undertake several practical nursing placements to develop essential clinical skills in real-world settings. The second year continues this blend of theory and practice, focusing on altered mental and physical health, advanced clinical placements, and important topics like human factors, risk, decision-making, and preparation for prescribing. This year allows students to deepen their clinical expertise and understanding of complex care needs. In the final year, students complete advanced nursing practice placements, further refining their skills in caring for children and young people with a variety of health conditions. They also engage in peer learning and teaching, which helps develop leadership and collaboration skills within professional nursing practice. Additionally, students undertake a significant research project that explores the evidence base for nursing practice, enhancing their ability to provide care informed by the latest research. Throughout the degree, students gain extensive hands-on experience through placements, supported by academic learning and simulation, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to provide high-quality nursing care to children and young people. Upon successful completion, graduates are eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as children’s nurses, ready to make a meaningful difference in healthcare settings.
