COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Criminology degree offers a structured progression across three years, developing both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in understanding crime, justice, and societal responses. In Year 1, students gain foundational knowledge through six compulsory modules. Crime Prevention examines strategies to reduce criminal activity, while Essential Skills for Criminology builds academic and analytical abilities necessary for the discipline. Introduction to Research Skills provides the tools for effective investigation and data analysis. Psychology in the Justice System explores psychological principles in understanding criminal behaviour and working within legal contexts. The Criminal Justice Process introduces the structure and operation of legal systems, and Theories of Crime and Justice covers key criminological perspectives explaining why crime occurs. In Year 2, the focus shifts to applying this knowledge in more specialised areas. Designing Research Projects equips students with the methodology to conduct independent investigations, Law for Justice deepens understanding of legal frameworks in justice contexts, and Media and Crime analyses how crime is portrayed and influenced by mass communication. In Year 3, students undertake a major independent Dissertation Project, demonstrating their ability to conduct advanced research in criminology. Punishment and Penology critically examines theories, practices, and social implications of punishment, preparing students for careers in criminal justice, research, policy, or advocacy.
