COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree offers a comprehensive, research-led approach to understanding health, disease, and the biological sciences, with a strong emphasis on practical skills and professional development. In the first year, students build a solid foundation through modules in developing research and professional identity, disease, health and environment, genetics and diversity, and molecular and cellular biology, while also undertaking extensive practical skills training for life scientists. The second year advances both theoretical knowledge and applied expertise, focusing on applied scientific practice with advanced skills, exploring global issues in health, and enhancing professional development. Core areas include the study of health and disease through development and detection methods, alongside interventions and disease management strategies. In the final year, students engage with current advances in biomedical science and bioethics, deepening their understanding of contemporary challenges and ethical considerations in the field. They also study diagnostic pathology, learning to analyse and interpret laboratory findings crucial to medical diagnoses. A major element is the life science research project, enabling students to design, conduct, and present original research. In addition, the placement experience offers valuable industry or clinical exposure, preparing graduates for careers in healthcare, research, diagnostics, or further study. This integrated structure ensures a balance between scientific theory, hands-on laboratory training, and professional readiness.
