COURSE CURRICULUM

The BMid (Hons) Midwifery degree is structured over three years, with each year building on the knowledge, skills, and professional attributes required to become a competent and confident midwife. Across all years, students study six key compulsory modules that address both the universal and specialised aspects of midwifery care. The Universal Care for Women and Newborn Infants module develops the ability to provide essential care for all women and babies, focusing on health promotion, normal pregnancy, birth, and postnatal care. Additional Care for Women and Newborn Infants builds on this by addressing the needs of women and infants requiring extra support, including those with complex or high-risk conditions. The Midwife as a Skilled Practitioner ensures students gain hands-on abilities in areas such as labour management, newborn assessment, and emergency response, underpinned by evidence-based practice. Safe and Effective Midwifery Care focuses on delivering high-quality, person-centred care in line with safety standards and regulatory requirements. Being an Accountable, Autonomous, Professional Midwife fosters the development of professional responsibility, ethical decision-making, and leadership skills, enabling students to practise independently within their scope. Promoting Excellence as a Colleague, Scholar and Leader emphasises teamwork, collaboration with other healthcare professionals, and the role of midwives as leaders, educators, and advocates for families. In the second and third years, these modules progress in complexity, allowing students to consolidate and apply their learning through clinical placements, simulation-based training, and reflective practice. By the final year, students are equipped to manage the full spectrum of midwifery care, from normal births to high-risk scenarios, while demonstrating leadership, critical thinking, and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams. This integrated approach ensures graduates are fully prepared for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and capable of delivering safe, compassionate, and professional care across diverse maternity settings.
