COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English Literature and Creative Writing degree offers a rich and diverse curriculum designed to develop both critical understanding and creative skills. In the first year, students explore foundational topics such as Children’s Literature, the Craft of Writing, the Story of English Literature, and engage in a collaborative project to foster teamwork and creative exchange. This initial year lays the groundwork by combining literary study with practical writing experience. Moving into the second year, students delve deeper into a broad range of genres and themes including Global Voices, Gothic Fiction, Magical Realism, and the Classics from Shakespeare to Modernism. Additional modules focus on The Writing Profession, which prepares students for the realities of working as writers, and Wild Words, which examines literature responding to the Anthropocene, reflecting contemporary environmental concerns. Social realism, crime, and narrative are explored through the Writing Society module, further broadening the literary and thematic scope. In the final year, students continue to develop their expertise in these areas, with the opportunity to undertake a Negotiated Project that allows for focused study tailored to their interests within English and Creative Writing. The curriculum maintains its emphasis on key genres such as Gothic Fiction and Magical Realism, while revisiting Global Voices and the environmental themes of Wild Words. The Classics remain central, alongside studies of social realism and crime narratives. Overall, this course balances a comprehensive literary education with creative practice, preparing students for careers in writing, publishing, education, and related creative industries by fostering analytical skills, creative expression, and professional awareness.
