ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of Staffordshire, a public research university located in Staffordshire, England, has its main campus in Stoke-on-Trent and additional campuses in Stafford, Lichfield, Shrewsbury, and London. Its origins trace back to 1901 when industrialist Alfred Bolton acquired a two-acre site on what is now College Road. By 1906, mining classes began, followed by pottery classes in 1907. In 1914, the Central School of Science and Technology was officially opened in the Cadman Building, which remains a central structure of the institution. Over the years, the university expanded both academically and physically. In 1915, a department for commercial Seger cone production was established, and by 1926, the institution was renamed North Staffordshire Technical College. Continued development included the expansion of the Cadman Building and the establishment of various academic departments such as engineering, pottery, mining, and chemistry. By 1934, student enrollment had grown significantly across these disciplines. Further infrastructure development occurred through the mid-20th century, and by 1960, new buildings like the Mellor and Dwight Buildings were added. In 1970, North Staffordshire Polytechnic was formed through the merger of several institutions, including Stoke-on-Trent College of Art and Staffordshire College of Technology. It later absorbed Madeley College of Education in 1977, strengthening its sports education offerings. During the 1980s, the decline of coal mining led to the closure of the mining department, and new programs such as International Relations emerged. The institution was renamed Staffordshire Polytechnic in 1988 and achieved university status in 1992, becoming Staffordshire University. The International Relations Department gained recognition during the 1992 UK Research Assessment Exercise. On 23 September 2024, the university was officially rebranded as the University of Staffordshire, continuing its legacy of adapting to educational needs while honoring its historical roots in technology, ceramics, and innovation.
