COURSE CURRICULUM

The Marine Environment and Resources MSc provides a structured two-year program designed to equip students with in-depth knowledge and practical skills in marine science. In the first year, all students study core modules that introduce fundamental aspects of the marine environment, including biological, chemical, physical, and geological oceanography. These modules cover topics from the flow of energy in marine ecosystems and the basics of chemical processes in the ocean to the formation of ocean basins and the dynamics controlling water movement, heat, and salinity. In addition to these compulsory modules, students select from optional modules such as advanced exploration geophysics, biogeochemical cycles in the Earth system, biological data science in R, computational data analysis using Python, deep-sea ecology, marine conservation and policy, and shelf seas and shelf edge dynamics. These options allow students to tailor their learning to specific research interests and career goals. In the second year, students continue to choose from similar specialised modules, enabling further development of technical, analytical, and research skills. Through this combination of core and elective modules, students gain a comprehensive understanding of marine systems, their conservation and management, and the ability to apply data analysis and scientific methods to real-world marine environmental challenges.
