COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Transportation Planning and Engineering: Infrastructure equips students with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills for the design, operation, and management of land transport systems. Core modules include highway and traffic engineering, which covers the fundamentals of road traffic flow, operational analysis, and the design of key road transport features, and railway engineering and operations, which examines system planning, operational processes, and the impacts of noise and vibration. Transport data analysis and techniques introduces methods for collecting and interpreting transport-related datasets, while transport economics explores how economic principles can address issues such as congestion, service inadequacy, and high costs. Transport modelling provides applied experience in transport demand, network, and policy modelling, and transport planning modules cover policy, governance, and practical approaches to planning. Students also undertake an independent MSc research project to explore a topic of their choice, developing critical research and analytical skills. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests, including human factors in engineering, which examines how human capabilities influence design; logistics systems operations, which studies the management of goods and services across transport networks; transport management and safety, focusing on optimizing infrastructure use; and transport, energy and the environment, which explores the environmental and energy impacts of transport systems. Graduates are prepared for professional roles across the transport sector.
