COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Transportation Planning and Engineering: Behaviour equips students with the knowledge and skills to understand, analyse, and improve transport systems while considering human, environmental, and policy factors. Core modules cover human factors in engineering, providing insights into how people’s characteristics and capabilities affect the design of systems and environments. Students gain expertise in transport data analysis and techniques, enabling them to handle complex datasets, and in transport economics, where they learn to address sector challenges such as congestion, service quality, and pricing. Transport modelling introduces state-of-the-art methods for predicting travel demand and system performance, while transport planning modules cover policy, governance, and practical applications, including case studies from global contexts. The course also addresses the interaction between transport, energy, and the environment, highlighting the sector’s carbon footprint and sustainable solutions. Students undertake an independent research project, applying theoretical and practical knowledge to investigate real-world transport issues. Optional modules allow for further specialization in highway and traffic engineering, logistics systems operations, railway engineering and operations, or transport management and safety. Through a combination of theoretical study, practical exercises, and exposure to real-world applications, graduates develop the expertise needed for careers in transport planning, engineering, management, and policy, preparing them to contribute effectively to sustainable and efficient transport systems.
