COURSE CURRICULUM

The Systems, Control and Signal Processing MSc at the University of Southampton provides students with advanced theoretical knowledge and practical skills in signal processing, control systems, and machine learning. Core modules include Advanced Systems and Signal Processing, which introduces model-based signal processing methods and system design theories through real-world case studies, and Signal Processing, covering analog and digital filter design as well as statistical signal processing techniques. Control System Design develops expertise in control theory and its practical applications, while Foundations of Machine Learning introduces fundamental principles for extracting meaningful information from complex datasets. Research Methods and Project Preparation equips students with the tools to plan and execute independent research, which is applied in the MSc Project and Dissertation to explore a specialist topic in depth under supervision. Optional modules allow students to further specialise in areas such as Advanced Machine Learning, Bayesian, Active and Reinforcement Learning, Deep Learning Technologies, Differentiable Programming, Digital Control System Design, Biometrics, Image Processing, and System Identification. The program combines mathematical rigor with computational practice, ensuring students gain experience in algorithm development, programming, and data analysis. Graduates leave with the skills necessary to tackle complex engineering challenges and pursue careers in research, industry, or further professional development, with accreditation supporting progression toward Chartered Engineer status.
