COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Sustainable Energy Technologies at the University of Southampton equips students with a thorough understanding of modern energy systems and their applications for sustainable power generation. Core modules cover advanced photovoltaics, fuel cells, and batteries, focusing on the design, operation, and efficiency of these systems, alongside the fundamentals of energy conversion and sustainability. Students explore renewable energy from wind, wave, and tidal sources, and examine applications of renewable energy, storage, and nuclear power. The program also develops practical skills through an independent research project, enabling students to investigate and analyse real-world energy challenges. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of sustainable energy systems, resources, and usage, including energy flows on a global scale and the environmental, social, and economic implications of energy technologies. Optional modules allow further specialisation in areas such as advanced electrical systems, bioenergy, offshore engineering, energy performance assessment of buildings, thermo-fluid engineering for carbon capture and storage, waste resource management, and data analytics for civil, environmental, and energy systems. This flexible approach ensures graduates develop both technical expertise and practical problem-solving skills, preparing them for careers in energy research, sustainable engineering, consultancy, or further academic study, while equipping them to address the pressing global challenges of low-carbon energy generation and sustainable resource management.
