COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Sustainability at the University of Southampton equips students with the knowledge and skills required to address complex environmental and sustainability challenges. Core modules focus on developing academic and technical skills, including research methods, sustainability and resilience, and high-level practical skills through The Sustainability Professional module, which engages students with local and regional environmental and sustainability organisations. Students also undertake an independent research project, allowing them to explore a topic of interest in depth while applying rigorous research methods and effectively communicating their findings. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies to specific areas of interest, such as air quality and environmental pollution, climate-conscious design of buildings and cities, core skills in GIS, data collection and research methods for sustainability, and the use of GIS for environmental management and consultancy. Further options include practical skills in remote sensing, programming for GIS and spatial analyses, remote sensing for Earth observation, sustainable resource management, and water pollution. This flexible approach ensures that graduates acquire both theoretical understanding and practical expertise in sustainability, environmental management, and geospatial analysis, preparing them for careers in consultancy, research, policy, and environmental management, or for further academic study at the postgraduate level.
