COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Space Systems Engineering course at the University of Southampton provides an in-depth understanding of spacecraft design, propulsion, and orbital mechanics, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application. Core modules include Advanced Astronautics, where students explore orbital mechanics in detail and learn sustainable space engineering practices, and Concurrent Space Systems Design, which integrates the various components of spacecraft engineering into collaborative group projects. The program also covers Spacecraft Instrumentation, guiding students through the development of instruments from requirement definition to operation, and Spacecraft Propulsion, which examines chemical and electric propulsion systems. Spacecraft Orbital Mechanics focuses on trajectory design for planet-centred and interplanetary missions, while Spacecraft Structural Design teaches static and dynamic analysis of satellite structures. Students undertake a critical MSc Research Project, developing skills in independent research, analysis, and effective communication of results. Optional modules allow further specialization, such as Applications of Computational Fluid Dynamics for practical flow analysis, Hypersonic and High-Temperature Gas Dynamics for high-speed aerospace vehicles, Principles of Photovoltaics, Fuel Cells and Batteries for power systems, and Turbulence to understand complex fluid motion in aerospace contexts. This combination of modules equips graduates with advanced technical skills, practical experience, and research expertise, preparing them for careers in the aerospace sector or further study in astronautics and space systems engineering.
