COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Demography at the University of Southampton provides students with advanced knowledge and practical skills in social research methods, statistical modelling, and demographic analysis. Core modules include Advanced Statistical Modelling and Applied Statistical Modelling, which equip students with the ability to apply statistical techniques to real-world problems and hierarchical data structures. Demographic Methods 1 and 2 introduce students to fundamental and advanced methods in demographic analysis, including life tables, health expectancies, event history analysis, and population rate calculations. Additional modules such as Understanding Population Change, Qualitative Methods, Survey Design and Data Quality, and Research Communication Skills develop the ability to collect, analyse, and communicate demographic and social research effectively. Students also complete an independent project or dissertation, consolidating their learning through original research. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests, covering topics such as complex survey data analysis, global health trends, social science measurement, gerontology, population and reproductive health, population, poverty and policy, and researching ageing societies. Through this combination of theory, quantitative and qualitative methods, and applied research, graduates gain a comprehensive understanding of population dynamics and social processes, preparing them for careers in social research, policy analysis, global health, and further academic study at PhD level.
