COURSE CURRICULUM

The Optical Engineering course offers a structured combination of core and optional modules that provide both theoretical and practical expertise in photonics. Core modules include Lasers, which explores the principles and applications of laser operation; Optical Fibres and Waveguides, focusing on the fundamentals of light guidance in photonic systems; and Photonic Materials and Device Platforms, which examine materials used in photonic technologies. The Photonics Laboratory and Study Skills module allows students to conduct experiments illustrating key laser and fibre concepts, while the Project module enables them to undertake supervised research in photonic materials, device design, and fabrication. Signal Processing and Machine Learning in Photonics introduces data analysis techniques for processing optical signals, linking photonics with modern computational tools. Students can also tailor their studies by selecting from a range of optional modules such as Advanced Lasers, Nanoscience: Technology and Advanced Materials, Optical Sensors, Quantum Information, Silicon Photonics, and Wireless and Mobile Networks. These options allow specialisation in cutting-edge areas like quantum communication, sensor design, or integrated photonic circuits. Together, these modules equip students with a deep understanding of optical systems and the practical skills needed to innovate in photonics research and industry.
