COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Operational Research and Finance at the University of Southampton equips students with advanced analytical, financial, and operational research skills essential for addressing complex problems in business and finance. Core modules include Corporate Finance 1, which covers sources of finance, the cost of capital, and long-term financing options, and Statistical Methods for OR Modelling, providing the foundations for stochastic processes and simulation techniques. Students also study Data Mining and Analytics, gaining practical experience with R and SQL, and OR Methods for Data Scientists, which introduces deterministic and stochastic operational research techniques applicable to real-world problems. The program emphasizes practical application through two Operational Research and Data Science Case Studies, enabling students to solve complex problems in collaboration with industry partners. A key feature is the summer project, allowing students to undertake either an external placement with an organisation or an internal research project, providing hands-on experience and the opportunity to develop a dissertation. Optional modules allow further specialisation, including Analytical Consultancy Skills, Computational Machine Learning and Optimisation, Computer-Based Statistical Modelling, Corporate Finance 2, Financial Portfolio Theory, Forecasting, Project Management, Project Risk Management, Flexible Regression, and Revenue Management. Graduates emerge with strong quantitative, computational, and financial modelling abilities, ready to contribute to financial institutions, consultancy, or advanced research in operational research and finance.
