COURSE CURRICULUM

The Oceanography MSc at the University of Southampton provides a comprehensive grounding in marine science through a combination of core and optional modules, preparing students for careers in research, consultancy, and environmental management. Core modules introduce students to the fundamentals of biological, chemical, physical, and geological oceanography, including energy flow, nutrient cycles, ocean basin formation, sedimentary processes, and the dynamics of water, heat, and salt transport. Students also develop key academic skills through the MSc Key Skills and Literature Review module and gain practical research experience through a full-time MSc Research Project, culminating in a dissertation. Optional modules allow students to specialise in areas such as advanced geophysics, biogeochemical cycles, marine microbial ecology, deep-sea ecology, marine reproduction, ecological modelling, climate and climate change, sea-level rise and coastal management, large-scale ocean processes, and computational data analysis using Python and R. Additional options include marine conservation and policy, seafloor exploration, and shelf seas dynamics, providing hands-on experience with contemporary observational datasets, modelling, and research vessel surveys. The flexible curriculum enables students to tailor their studies according to career goals and interests, equipping graduates with the quantitative, analytical, and practical skills required to address contemporary challenges in oceanography, climate science, and marine resource management.
