COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ocean Energy and Offshore Engineering MSc at the University of Southampton equips students with advanced knowledge and practical skills in maritime engineering and offshore energy systems. Core modules cover fundamentals of maritime engineering, finite element analysis in solid mechanics, marine structures in fluids, and offshore engineering and analysis, providing a strong foundation in the design, structural assessment, and hydrodynamics of offshore platforms and floating vessels. Students gain hands-on experience in maritime robotics, exploring autonomous underwater and surface vehicle systems, and develop an understanding of maritime safety, risk management, and legal frameworks. The program emphasizes professional development for maritime engineers, preparing graduates to solve complex engineering problems while considering social, technical, economic, and environmental constraints. Students also study renewable energy from wind, wave, and tidal resources, focusing on practical methods for cost-effective energy extraction and conversion. Optional modules allow further specialization in areas such as computational fluid dynamics, advanced marine structural design, ship manoeuvring and control, turbulence, and sustainable energy systems, providing flexibility to tailor learning to individual career goals.
