COURSE CURRICULUM

The Marine Engineering MSc at the University of Southampton equips students with advanced knowledge and practical skills in maritime engineering, preparing them for careers in the marine sector or further PhD study. Core modules cover advanced electrical systems, including power system analysis, power electronics, and electrical machine operation in applications such as renewable energy, marine propulsion, and robotics. Students also study advanced sensors and condition monitoring, focusing on machinery, biomechanical systems, monitoring strategies, and international standards. The program provides a strong foundation in maritime engineering principles, ship power plants, drive trains, and auxiliary systems, alongside maritime robotics, where students learn the design and operation of autonomous underwater and surface vehicles. Additional modules cover maritime safety, risk, environmental considerations, and professional development for engineers, emphasizing problem-solving, sustainable design, and real-world applications. Students undertake an MSc research project to conduct independent, original research and develop critical analytical skills. Optional modules allow students to specialize further in areas such as failure of materials and components, marine structures in fluids, offshore engineering and analysis, renewable energy from wind, wave, and tide, and zero-carbon ship resistance and propulsion, equipping them to design and analyze maritime systems that are efficient, sustainable, and resilient under diverse operational and environmental conditions.
