COURSE CURRICULUM

The Maritime Archaeology MSc at the University of Southampton equips students with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in studying human interactions with the world’s oceans and seas. Core modules include Applied Maritime Archaeology, which introduces theoretical, ethical, logistical, technical, and legislative considerations for investigating underwater sites, and the Archaeology Masters Dissertation, where students undertake independent research under supervision to produce a substantial, original study. Maritime Aspects of Culture provides an accelerated introduction to key theoretical concepts and evidence used in maritime archaeology, while Maritime Museums and Heritage Management explores the protection, management, and dissemination of maritime cultural heritage to the public. Students also select from a range of optional modules to develop specialized skills and knowledge. Options include Analysis of Archaeological Faunal Remains, focusing on identifying and interpreting animal bones; Ancient Mediterranean Seafaring, examining historical maritime cultures; Bioarchaeology of Human Remains, integrating osteology and palaeopathology; and Nautical Archaeology, which studies ship and boat remains as primary historical sources. Additional modules, such as Professional Placement, Professional Practice, and Cultural Heritage within Environmental Impact Assessment, provide practical experience and vocational skills. Through this combination of core and optional modules, students gain expertise in fieldwork, laboratory analysis, research methods, and heritage management, preparing them for careers in maritime archaeology and related sectors.
