COURSE CURRICULUM

This master’s degree in archaeology provides students with comprehensive training in both practical and theoretical aspects of the discipline, preparing them for careers in commercial archaeology and the cultural heritage sector. Core modules cover essential skills such as the analysis of faunal remains, palaeopathology, bioarchaeology of human remains, and the study of Palaeolithic stone tool assemblages. Students develop expertise in professional archaeological practice, including survey, excavation, report writing, project design, and heritage management, alongside completing a dissertation that involves original research. The program also emphasizes vocational experience through professional placements, enabling students to apply their skills in real-world settings and gain exposure to heritage institutions. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests, including maritime archaeology, ancient Mediterranean seafaring, applied maritime archaeology, GIS for archaeology, molecular archaeology, cultural heritage in environmental impact assessment, and the study of ancient civilizations such as Egypt. Other modules explore contemporary perspectives, including memory, narrative, identity, and national and transnational heritage. Students gain practical experience with advanced techniques such as geophysical survey, data management, and the analysis of archaeological and human remains. This multidisciplinary approach combines scientific, historical, and cultural perspectives to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to engage critically and effectively with archaeological research and heritage management.
