COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing equips students with advanced skills in GIS, remote sensing, and geospatial data science, preparing them to tackle complex environmental and societal challenges. Core modules provide foundational training in GIS, the principles and applications of remote sensing, programming for geospatial data analysis using Python, and essential academic and research skills. Students also complete a substantial research project, culminating in a dissertation that demonstrates their ability to conduct independent, data-driven investigations. Optional modules allow students to specialise according to their interests, including Earth Observation for environmental and societal applications, active remote sensing using LIDAR and RADAR systems, GIS for health analysis, GIS for environmental management and consultancy, and applied machine learning for geospatial data science. These electives provide practical experience in utilising geospatial technologies to monitor, analyse, and solve real-world problems, integrating techniques from data science, AI, and remote sensing. The program combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice, ensuring students develop the technical expertise, analytical skills, and research capabilities needed for careers in consultancy, environmental management, public health, or further academic study such as a PhD. Graduates gain the ability to interpret and manage geospatial data effectively, making informed decisions in complex and dynamic contexts.
