COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Finance program at the University of Southampton equips students with advanced knowledge and practical skills essential for careers in finance, investment, and risk management. Core modules cover advanced corporate finance, portfolio theory and asset pricing, quantitative finance, time series modelling, and an introduction to finance, providing a strong foundation in financial theory, investment analysis, and risk assessment. The program emphasizes the application of analytical tools to real-world financial data and decisions, with a strong focus on shareholder value, capital budgeting, and asset valuation. Students also complete a dissertation, allowing them to undertake an extended independent research project that demonstrates their ability to analyse complex financial issues and apply theoretical insights. Optional modules enable students to specialise in areas such as behavioural finance, computational finance, derivative and fixed income securities analysis, stock market analysis, management of financial risk, and sustainable finance, offering exposure to both traditional and emerging areas in finance. Through a combination of theoretical instruction, practical exercises, and research-led learning, students develop critical thinking, quantitative, and problem-solving skills. Graduates are prepared for roles in financial institutions, investment firms, corporate finance, risk management, and consultancy, as well as for research-focused careers or further study at PhD level, gaining the expertise to navigate dynamic financial markets and strategic decision-making.
