COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Economics and Finance program provides a rigorous foundation in economic theory, quantitative techniques, and financial analysis, equipping students with the skills needed to analyse and interpret complex financial markets. Core modules include economic analysis, which develops an understanding of microeconomic concepts, methods, and policy applications, and quantitative economics, which introduces empirical methodologies and econometric techniques applied to real-world economic issues. Financial econometrics focuses on evaluating models of asset price dynamics and returns, while preliminary mathematics and statistics ensures students have the essential quantitative skills required for postgraduate study. A key component of the course is the dissertation, where students undertake an independent research project, reviewing literature, identifying gaps in knowledge, and applying empirical methods to a chosen topic. Optional modules allow further specialisation, including corporate finance, financial derivatives, household finance, industrial economics, resource and energy economics, experimental economics, health policy and economics, and time series econometrics. These modules provide practical and theoretical insight into areas such as corporate decision-making, consumer behaviour, resource management, energy economics, and the application of econometric techniques to time series and experimental data. Graduates develop advanced analytical, research, and quantitative skills, preparing them for careers in finance, economic research, consultancy, policy analysis, or further doctoral-level study.
