COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Environmental Pollution Control at the University of Southampton equips students with the knowledge and practical skills required for careers in air, water, and waste pollution management. Core modules develop academic, technical, and research capabilities, including training in remote sensing, spatial analysis, water and air pollution, and independent research through a comprehensive MSc project. Students gain an understanding of the physical, chemical, and biological processes involved in pollution, and learn to monitor, assess, and mitigate environmental impacts using modern scientific and engineering methods. The program also allows students to choose from a range of optional modules, including biodiversity, restoration and applied ecology, river and estuary restoration, flood modelling and mitigation, coastal and maritime engineering, GIS for environmental management, programming for GIS and spatial analyses, sustainable resource management, and freshwater ecosystem studies. These modules provide the opportunity to develop specialist expertise in areas relevant to environmental consultancy, management, and policy, as well as to explore the socio-economic, cultural, and technical aspects of sustainability. Students gain hands-on experience with geospatial data, analytical tools, and environmental monitoring techniques, preparing them to address complex environmental challenges. Graduates leave the course with the skills and knowledge to pursue professional roles in environmental science, sustainability, and pollution control across diverse sectors, including regulatory bodies, consultancy firms, and research organisations.
