COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Environmental Monitoring and Assessment at the University of Southampton equips students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for careers in environmental science and consultancy. Core modules develop essential academic and technical skills, including remote sensing, spatial analysis, and practical data processing from optical sensors, alongside the opportunity to complete an independent research project. Students gain expertise in data collection, geospatial analysis, and the use of GIS tools for environmental management. The program also offers a wide selection of optional modules, allowing students to specialise in areas such as biodiversity restoration, climate-responsive urban design, coastal and maritime engineering, flood modelling and mitigation, energy performance assessment, and water pollution management. Modules in programming and automation for GIS, remote sensing for Earth observation, and sustainability and resilience provide further technical competence. The Sustainability Professional module integrates practical industry-led training, enabling students to engage directly with environmental and sustainability organisations, enhancing their professional experience. The combination of applied technical training, research skills, and theoretical understanding prepares graduates to address complex environmental challenges, evaluate socio-ecological systems, and implement sustainable solutions. Students leave the program with the ability to assess, monitor, and manage environmental impacts effectively, making them well-prepared for roles in consultancy, environmental monitoring, policy development, and resource management.
