COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Consultancy master’s at the University of Southampton equips students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to address complex environmental challenges. Core modules such as Academic and Technical Skills Development, MSc Research Project, and The Sustainability Professional provide a foundation in academic techniques, independent research, and professional practice in collaboration with environmental and sustainability organisations. Students also have the option to specialise through a range of modules covering key areas of environmental science and sustainability. These include Air Quality and Environmental Pollution, Biodiversity and Conservation, Biodiversity, Restoration and Applied Ecology, Climate Design of Buildings and Cities, and Energy Performance Assessment of Buildings, which provide scientific and technical knowledge to assess and manage environmental impacts. GIS skills are central to the program, with modules like Core Skills in GIS, GIS for Environmental Management and Consultancy, and Programming for GIS and Spatial Analyses enabling students to apply geospatial tools to environmental management and sustainability challenges. Additional options such as Freshwater Ecosystems, Water Pollution, Data Collection and Research Methods, and Sustainability and Resilience broaden understanding of ecosystems, pollution processes, and socio-ecological systems. The program integrates theory with practice, offering fieldwork opportunities, professional training, and independent projects that prepare graduates for careers in environmental consultancy, sustainability management, and applied environmental research.
