COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Advanced Mechanical Engineering Science at the University of Southampton offers a comprehensive understanding of materials and their applications in modern engineering. Core modules focus on the performance, microstructural analysis, and surface characterisation of structural materials such as steel, aluminium, titanium, nickel alloys, ceramics, and composites. Students explore failure mechanisms, surface engineering, and material behaviour in transport applications, while gaining practical experience through a research project that develops planning, management, and critical analysis skills. The program also covers fundamental mechanical engineering science, supporting interdisciplinary learning across themes such as mechatronics, propulsion, biomedical engineering, computational design, and advanced materials. Optional modules allow students to specialise further in areas such as advanced photovoltaics, fuel cells, and batteries, aircraft propulsion and structural design, alloys for additive manufacturing, biomaterials, composites engineering, finite element analysis, and manufacturing processes. These modules provide in-depth knowledge of design, production, sustainability, and performance of engineering materials, preparing students to solve complex engineering challenges.
