COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Economics program at Southampton provides a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip students with advanced skills in economic theory, econometrics, and quantitative methods. Core modules include Applied Microeconometrics, which applies contemporary techniques to analyse individual-level data such as households and firms, and provides examples from labour, public policy, and other sectors. Macroeconomics focuses on real business cycle models and modern macroeconomic theory, while Microeconomics introduces graduate-level frameworks including general equilibrium and game theory, emphasizing model construction and problem solving. Preliminary Mathematics and Statistics ensures students have the foundational skills necessary for advanced economic analysis, and Quantitative Methods teaches essential research techniques with practical assessments. Students also complete a Dissertation, undertaking independent research to apply economic theory and methods to a topic of their choosing, demonstrating the ability to critically evaluate literature and conduct rigorous analysis. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests, including Corporate Finance, Experimental Economics, Financial Derivatives, Health Policy and Economics, Household Finance, Industrial Economics, Labour Economics, Resource and Energy Economics, and various specialized macroeconomic and microeconomic topics.
