COURSE CURRICULUM

The Data Science MSc at the University of Southampton equips students with advanced skills in machine learning, data mining, data visualisation, and computational analysis, preparing them for careers in industry, government, or academia. Core modules provide a solid foundation in data science, including statistical methods, machine learning principles, research methods, and project preparation, while practical laboratory sessions give hands-on experience with real-world datasets. Students also complete a substantial research project or dissertation, allowing them to explore a specialist area in depth under expert supervision. Optional modules enable students to tailor their studies to specific interests, covering topics such as advanced machine learning, deep learning technologies, Bayesian and reinforcement learning, natural language processing, algorithmic game theory, knowledge graphs for AI systems, simulation modelling, social media and network science, data economy, and quantum computing. This flexible structure allows students to combine technical, analytical, and computational approaches with an understanding of the ethical, legal, and societal implications of data. By the end of the program, students will have the ability to analyse and visualise complex datasets, develop machine learning models, implement AI systems, and communicate insights effectively, equipping them to tackle complex challenges in data-driven environments and contribute to research, innovation, and decision-making in a wide range of sectors.
