COURSE CURRICULUM

The Data Analytics for Government MSc equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to work in official statistics, government agencies, or organizations conducting large-scale analytical projects. Core modules provide a foundation in statistical and data science methods, including data mining, data visualisation, and statistical programming in R and Python. Students also study elements of statistics and data science, generalized linear models, machine learning, and research communication skills to prepare for practical data analysis and the completion of a dissertation. The course introduces specialized topics relevant to government and social research, such as statistics in government, survey methods, and handling administrative and big data sources. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests or career goals, covering areas such as compensating for non-response, complex survey data analysis, demographic methods, evaluation and monitoring, small area estimation, statistical disclosure control, and time series analysis. The program also explores qualitative research methods, statistical genetics, survival models, and the design of experiments, providing a comprehensive understanding of both technical and applied aspects of social data analysis. By integrating theoretical knowledge with practical skills, students are prepared to manage, interpret, and communicate complex data effectively, supporting evidence-based decision-making and policy development in governmental and public sector contexts.
