COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Cyber Security program at the University of Southampton offers comprehensive training in both technical and strategic aspects of cyber security, preparing students to meet the growing global demand for experts in the field. Core modules cover essential topics such as cryptography, exploring the mathematics, techniques, and applications of secure communication, and foundations of cyber security, providing an overview of the current landscape and the interplay between technical, legal, and human factors. Students develop practical skills through network and web-based security, software security, and security of cyber-physical systems, gaining experience in protecting distributed systems, analyzing software threats, and understanding hardware vulnerabilities. The program also emphasizes research and independent study, with modules in research methods and project preparation, culminating in an MSc project and dissertation that allow students to investigate a specialist area in depth under expert supervision. Elective modules offer additional expertise in areas such as cyber crime, insecurity and the dark web, digital forensics, usable security and privacy, machine learning applications in security, and software project management and secure development. Graduates of the program acquire a well-rounded skill set, combining theoretical knowledge, practical competence, and research experience, equipping them to design, build, analyze, and defend secure systems across academic, commercial, and governmental sectors.
