COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Biomedical Engineering program combines engineering, biology, and medicine to equip students with the knowledge and skills to develop innovative healthcare solutions. Core modules provide a strong foundation in human biology, systems physiology, and biomedical engineering principles, enabling students to understand anatomy, physiology, and disease processes in order to apply engineering techniques meaningfully. Students undertake an independent MSc research project to develop critical research skills, alongside a module in translational medicine that introduces the regulatory, ethical, and practical considerations for bringing novel medical devices, software, and engineering solutions into clinical practice. Optional modules allow students to specialise and deepen their expertise in areas such as auditory implants, biomedical imaging and spectroscopy, signal and image processing, robotics, orthopaedic biomechanics, sensors and condition monitoring, and computational methods. Students also explore advanced engineering topics including finite element analysis, control and instrumentation, heat transfer, and materials science, which are applied to the development of medical technologies. Throughout the program, emphasis is placed on the ethical, societal, and safety implications of biomedical innovations. By combining theoretical knowledge with practical application, students are prepared to design, evaluate, and implement medical devices and technologies, and to take on leading roles in healthcare, research, and biomedical engineering innovation.
