COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Biodiversity and Conservation program equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary for careers in ecological consultancy, conservation management, and environmental research. Core modules focus on developing academic and technical skills, including research methods, practical abilities in remote sensing, and applied ecology in a changing world. Students gain expertise in monitoring biodiversity, understanding threats such as invasive species, climate change, and habitat fragmentation, and exploring strategies for restoration and ecosystem enhancement. The program emphasizes independent research through the MSc Research Project, where students design, execute, and communicate original investigations on topics relevant to biodiversity and conservation. Practical skills in data collection, spatial analysis, and the use of remote sensing technologies are integral, preparing students to assess and manage ecological systems effectively. Optional modules allow students to tailor their learning to specific interests, covering areas such as GIS for environmental management, freshwater ecosystem dynamics, river and estuary restoration, bioenergy, global challenges in biology, and sustainability and resilience. The curriculum integrates interdisciplinary approaches, combining ecological science, technology, and environmental management, while emphasizing the socioeconomic, legal, and policy contexts of conservation. Graduates leave with the knowledge, technical expertise, and analytical skills to address complex environmental challenges, contribute to sustainable ecosystem management, and support evidence-based decision-making in conservation practice.
