COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Archaeology provides a comprehensive and flexible program that equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills across a broad range of archaeological specialisms. Core modules such as Analysis of Archaeological Faunal Remains, Bioarchaeology of Human Remains, Palaeopathology in Context, and the Analysis of Palaeolithic Stone Tool Assemblages develop expertise in identifying, recording, and interpreting human and animal remains, as well as material culture from past societies. Students also complete a substantial independent research project through the Archaeology Masters Dissertation, enabling original research under supervisory guidance. Professional skills are further enhanced through modules such as Professional Practice and the Professional Placement in the Archaeological and Cultural Heritage Sector, providing experience in real-world heritage and archaeological environments. Additional modules allow students to tailor their learning to specific interests, including maritime archaeology, molecular archaeology, GIS applications, cultural heritage management, and regional studies such as Later Anglo-Saxon England or Ancient Egypt. The program encourages interdisciplinary approaches, combining perspectives from history, science, and heritage studies, and provides access to state-of-the-art facilities including isotope labs, scanning and imaging suites, and extensive collections of skeletal and artefactual materials. Graduates leave with the practical, analytical, and research skills needed for careers in archaeology, heritage management, or further academic research.
