COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Palaeoanthropology and Archaeology provides a comprehensive program that combines practical skills, theoretical knowledge, and research training to study human evolution and past societies. Core modules focus on the analysis of archaeological faunal remains, human osteology, palaeopathology, and stone tool assemblages, enabling students to understand age, sex, diet, health, and behaviour of past populations. The course also includes professional practice and placement modules, allowing students to develop vocational skills and gain real-world experience in heritage and archaeology sectors. Students complete an independent dissertation project, conducting original research under supervision. Optional modules enable the personalisation of studies and cover diverse areas such as maritime archaeology, palaeoenvironmental impact assessment, GIS applications, molecular archaeology, Mediterranean seafaring, and cultural heritage management. Additional modules explore theoretical and cultural perspectives, including narrative, identity, nation, and power, as well as advanced studies in human origins, bioarchaeology, and osteoarchaeology. The program combines hands-on practical training with access to specialist laboratories, collections of human and animal remains, stone tools, and dedicated research facilities. Placements with organisations such as Historic England and Wessex Archaeology provide professional experience, preparing graduates for careers in archaeology, heritage management, research, and related disciplines, while fostering both scientific and cultural understanding.
