COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Acoustical Engineering equips students with advanced technical knowledge and practical skills to address challenges in sound, vibration, and signal processing across a range of applications. The program combines core modules with elective options, allowing students to tailor their learning to areas of interest such as noise control, architectural acoustics, biomedical ultrasound, and electroacoustics. Core modules include the MSc Research Project, where students undertake independent, original research, and Professional Aspects of Engineering, which prepares them for professional practice as Chartered Engineers. Elective modules cover foundational topics like fundamentals of acoustics and vibration, as well as advanced subjects such as active control of sound and vibration, aeroacoustics, human responses to sound and vibration, and signal processing. Students also explore applications in ocean acoustics, biomedical imaging, and the physiology and psychology of hearing, developing both analytical and problem-solving skills. Practical and computational modules, including vibration engineering practice and theoretical and computational acoustics, provide hands-on experience in modelling, measurement, and analysis. The program emphasizes the integration of theoretical knowledge with real-world engineering challenges, preparing graduates for careers in acoustical engineering, consultancy, research, and further study at PhD level, with the ability to innovate and apply acoustical solutions in diverse technological and industrial contexts.
