COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes Wildlife Conservation program is designed to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for a career in conservation. Central to the course is the MRes Wildlife Conservation Research Project, which accounts for two-thirds of the program and allows students to work closely with a Marwell Wildlife Conservation Biologist and a University of Southampton supervisor. During this project, students develop advanced research skills, designing and executing a study with real-world conservation impact. The program also includes Biological Data Science in R, which equips students with the ability to analyse and interpret complex biological datasets, combining skills in biology, statistics, and computer science. The Conservation Biology module provides a comprehensive understanding of conservation issues at multiple scales, from individual animals to populations, including conservation genetics, habitat restoration, reintroductions, and the effects of human activity. The Partnerships in the Field module focuses on collaborative and community-based conservation, highlighting the importance of teamwork and engagement within the context of the WHO’s One Health philosophy. Using case studies from Marwell Wildlife, students learn about interdisciplinary approaches and the practical challenges of implementing conservation initiatives. Together, these modules ensure graduates are well-prepared to contribute effectively to global wildlife conservation efforts.
