COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes in Economics provides a comprehensive foundation in both theoretical and applied economics while equipping students with advanced research skills for independent study and future PhD work. Core modules include Preliminary Mathematics and Statistics, ensuring students have the quantitative skills needed for postgraduate study, followed by Quantitative Methods, which develops proficiency in statistical and econometric techniques. Students also study Microeconomics and Macroeconomics to gain a strong grounding in graduate-level economic theory, covering general equilibrium, game theory, and real business cycle models. Applied Microeconometrics teaches students to analyse individual-level data from households, firms, and other microeconomic contexts, while Research in Economics familiarises them with cutting-edge economic research through seminars and workshops. The program culminates in the MRes Economics Dissertation, allowing students to design, implement, and present an independent research project that demonstrates their analytical, technical, and conceptual skills. Optional modules allow further specialisation, including Experimental Economics, Financial Derivatives, Household Finance, Labour Economics, Numerical Methods in Macroeconomics, Time Series Econometrics, and Computational Machine Learning and Optimisation. These options enable students to explore advanced topics in econometrics, finance, policy, and computational methods. By the end of the program, graduates possess the theoretical knowledge, practical research experience, and analytical expertise required for careers in economics, finance, public policy, or progression to doctoral study.
