COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes Big Data Biology program is designed to equip students with advanced skills in quantitative and computational biology, focusing on large-scale biological data analysis and research. The core of the degree is the extensive Big Data Biology Research Project, which accounts for two-thirds of the program and involves computational and data-driven approaches to investigate diverse biological questions. Students have the opportunity to tailor their studies by selecting from a wide range of specialist modules, covering topics such as applied plant biology, biodiversity and conservation, biofilms and microbial communities, bioinformatics and systems biology, biological data science in R, biomedical parasitology, cancer chromosome biology, cellular signalling, genomics, immunology, molecular cell biology, neurodegenerative disease, pharmacology, and structural biology. Additional modules explore machine learning applications, data-driven network analysis, and computational approaches to biomedical research, preparing students to handle complex datasets and develop predictive models. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, integrating biology, mathematics, computer science, and engineering, while providing practical training in experimental and computational methods. Graduates gain the expertise to conduct independent research, advance knowledge in biological sciences, and contribute to data-driven solutions in biomedical, environmental, and biotechnological fields, making them well-prepared for research careers or doctoral study.
