COURSE CURRICULUM

The MMus at the University of Southampton provides advanced training across four specialist pathways—Composition, Performance, Music Education, and Musicology—preparing students for careers in music, teaching, the cultural sector, or doctoral research. Core modules guide students through the development of professional skills, research, and creative practice. Composition students focus on developing a portfolio, refining compositional techniques, and exploring technical devices and formal procedures. Performance students work towards a final recital while enhancing instrumental or vocal technique, repertoire, presentation, and teaching skills. Music Education students complete a final project or portfolio of recorded lessons, integrating reflective teaching practice with pedagogical theory. Musicology students undertake a dissertation that applies advanced research methods and critical practice in music analysis, history, or theory. Supporting modules, such as Artists and Repertoires, Professional Writing and Presentation Skills, and The Postgraduate Learning Curve, provide essential knowledge of the music industry, research techniques, and academic skills. Optional modules allow students to explore diverse areas including film music composition, orchestration and arranging, community music practice, global music industries, digital sound and songwriting, ensemble pedagogy, and contemporary music culture. Collectively, the program integrates practical performance, compositional creativity, research expertise, and industry insight, enabling students to tailor their studies to individual interests while developing the skills and knowledge required for professional and academic success in music.
