COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Translation Technology and Digital Communication at the University of Southampton combines theoretical study with practical skill development to prepare students for careers in translation, interpreting, and multilingual digital communication. Core modules include a dissertation, which allows students to undertake an extended 12,000-word independent research project in Languages and Cultures or Translation and Professional Communication Skills, practical translation exercises, research skills for dissertation preparation, translation technology training using tools such as Trados and MemoQ, and translation theory and practice. Students also have the opportunity to choose from a range of optional modules to tailor their studies to specific career interests. These options include audiovisual translation with a focus on English-Chinese subtitling, introduction to interpreting, language and intercultural communication, public service interpreting, specialist translation practice, and placement modules for practical work experience. Additional modules explore interdisciplinary topics such as narrative non-fiction, narrative, place and identity, nation, culture and power, memory in national and transnational contexts, transnational movement in the age of globalisation, and writing for children and young people. This combination of core and elective modules equips students with a strong foundation in translation technology, cultural understanding, research methods, and practical communication skills, enabling them to work effectively in multicultural, multilingual, and technologically driven professional environments.
